The KazakhTelecom ( Kazakh Қазақтелеком , Russian Казахтелеком is) with a market share of around 35 percent, the largest Kazakh telecommunications company based in only Sultan . The company, which is listed on the Kazakh stock exchange in the KASE Index , is majority owned by the Kazakh state company Samruk-Kazyna .

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the Kazakh government adopted an agenda for the development of telecommunications in Kazakhstan in 1991 in order to strengthen this sector in the country. On June 17, 1994, KazakhTelecom was finally founded.

In 1997 the company went public on the Kazakh Stock Exchange .

A Next Generation Network was set up in 2007 in the cities of Nur-Sultan , Almaty , Qaraghandy , Pawlodar , Taras and Taldykorgan . A year later, other large cities followed. As part of the government's rural development program, KazakhTelecom improved its telephone network between 2004 and 2010.

At the end of 2011, KazakhTelecom and the Swedish telecommunications provider TeliaSonera reached an agreement on the sale of the shares in the Kazakh mobile operator Kcell . In February 2012 TeliaSonera took over 49 percent of the shares of KazakhTelecom in Kcell for the purchase price of 1.52 billion US dollars.
