Taras

Taras has been settled for over 2000 years. The city celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 2002. In the 5th century, the city of Taras was there on a caravan route between Europe and China. The battle of the Talas between the victorious Abbasid Caliphate and the Chinese Empire took place near the city in 751 . Taras was ruled by the Arabs in the 8th and 9th centuries and devastated by the Mongols in the 13th century .

In the late 18th century, the Kazakh city of Aulije-Ata (Аулие-Ата) was founded there. After the October Revolution of 1917, the city was added to the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Turkestan within Russia on April 18, 1918 . When the ASSR Turkestan was split up in 1924, Aulije-Ata became part of the Kazakh SSR , which was newly founded on October 27, 1924 within the Soviet Union . In 1936 the name was changed to Mirsojan after the politician Levon Mirsojan and, when he later fell out of favor in the wake of the Stalinist terror, in 1938 to Jambul (after Akyn Schambyl Schabajew ). On June 8, 1997, by order of President Nazarbayev , the city was given its original name Taras ( Kazakh scales ).
