The Qaratau ( Kazakh Қаратау Жотасы ; Russian хребет Каратау / Karatau ) is a mountain range in southern Kazakhstan .
The Qaratau is a northwestern branch of the Tianshan . The name is of Turkish origin and can be translated as "Black Mountains". The mountain range is about 420 km long and extends north of the Syr Darya River in a southeast-northwest direction. To the north of the Qaratau is the Mujunkum desert . The largest elevations reach a height of 2176 m , the average height is between 1000 m and 1500 m. There are caves and archaeological sites in the mountains.
