geography
37 km to the south is a Turkish sanctuary, which, also because of its remoteness, is very well preserved. It is located at 3000 m altitude in the mountains. So far, over 250 objects have been found, including 70 steles. In 1998 the sanctuary was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
history
In the Middle Ages, Merke was a city with a square shape, protected by a city wall, on the bank of a river. In the southwest the remains of a citadel have been preserved. The city was on a trade route between Bishkek and Taraz .
Relics of the Sogdians , Turkic peoples , Karluks , Karakhanids and Mongols were found in excavations . A church built in the city was converted into a mosque (before 985).
In the early 13th century, the city was destroyed by the Mongols . In the 19th century people from Kokand settled here again .
Wilhelm Barthold examined the ruins for the first time in 1893–94 , followed by smaller excavations in 1936, 1954 and 2000. From 2006, more extensive excavations were carried out.
