geography

Qaratau is a green oasis on the edge of the steppe and at the foot of the Qaratau . About 10 km away from Qaratau there has been a seismological observation station of the Geophysical Institute in Almaty since December 2001 , which records data for Kazakhstan for the organization of the treaty on the comprehensive ban on nuclear tests under the treaty on the ban on nuclear weapons tests.

history

The history of the city goes back to the establishment of a workers' village called Tschulaktau (Чулактау). German, Greek, Korean and Japanese prisoners of war from other parts of the Soviet Union were deported here in 1946 to mine phosphorite . The amount of mined phosphorite increased over the years, which means that the Tschulaktau settlement continued to grow. In 1963 the place received city rights and was renamed Qaratau. In order to process the phosphorite on site, a chemical industry was established in the city, the products of which were transported on to Jambul .

With the end of the Soviet Union and the independence of Kazakhstan, the economic decline of the place began in the early 1990s. Many of the resident companies ceased operations and the city lost many of its residents who migrated to large cities in search of work. While Qaratau had almost 55,000 inhabitants in its heyday, this number fell to around 28,000 people by the 1999 census. Due to the emigration of the population, many residential buildings were empty. To this day there are micro-districts in the city that are deserted. The descendants of the many prisoners of war who were brought to Qaratau after the Second World War left Kazakhstan and went back to their former countries of origin.

In recent years, the district administration began to take action against the city's decline. As part of a housing program, abandoned houses were renovated. The local authorities managed to sell several multi-storey buildings to construction investors on condition that they be renovated.
