Qulan ( Kazakh Құлан , Russian Кулан Kulan ; until 1992 Lugowoje / Луговое) is a place in the Shambyl region in southern Kazakhstan .

geography

Qulan is located in the Shambyl region in southern Kazakhstan and is the administrative center of Audany Turar Rysqulow . It is located around 110 kilometers east of Taras and 150 kilometers west of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek at the foot of the Kyrgyz Alatau .

history

Qulan was a place on the Silk Road in the Middle Ages . At the end of the 19th century, the first excavations began in the east of the village under the direction of Wassili Bartold . From 1936, archaeological excavations began by the Kazakh Department of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , which revealed that there was a settlement on this site as early as the 1st century. In the 7th century the place is mentioned in written records of the road network of the Chinese Tang Dynasty . Qulan is also mentioned in the records of Arab authors describing the places along the Silk Road from the 8th to 10th centuries. The area of ​​the city was given as ten square kilometers, a significant size for this time. Soviet archaeologists discovered the remains of a palace in the 1960s. The excavation site has been part of the Silk Roads site since 2014 : the road network of the Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor of the UNESCO World Heritage Site .
