Shangatas ( Kazakh Жаңатас ; Russian Жанатас Schanatas ) is a small town in southern Kazakhstan and the administrative seat of Sarysu County in the Shambyl region .

history

The development of Shangatas is closely related to the mining of phosphorite in the Qaratau basin. With the start of dismantling, a workers' village was founded in 1964. The mining in the region was intensified over time, which also led to the growth of the workers' village. In 1969, the settlement was granted city rights and renamed Shangatas (Kazakh for New Stone). Within a few years, new residential buildings were built and the mining operations continued to grow. In 1989 there were already 53,000 people in the city.

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the economic changes in Kazakhstan resulted in the mining operations in Shanghai getting into great difficulties. In the early 1990s, the city's main mining operations closed. As a result, much of the population moved to other cities to find work. As a result, entire apartment blocks were abandoned and fell into disrepair over time; some of them were demolished over time. Hundreds of abandoned buildings in the city have been demolished in recent years. At the southern entrance to the town, the ninth micro-district was demolished.

population

22,701 people live in the city.

The Russian company EuroChem has also been mining phosphorite in Shanghai since 2013 . EuroChem invested several hundred million US dollars in the construction of a plant for the production of mineral fertilizers and the development of the phosphate rock basin of Qaratau. A wind farm has been under construction nine kilometers south of the city since July 2019 . With a capacity of 100 MW, the largest wind farm in Central Asia is to be built here by mid-2020 .
