action

In her early 50s, recognized linguist Dr. Alice Howland's first changes. She occasionally suffers from difficulties with spatial orientation and forgets certain terms during her lectures. She then had herself tested in a clinic and confided her fears to her husband John, who tried to calm her down, shortly before the results were announced. The neurological examination reveals that Alice has a hereditary, early-onset form of Alzheimer's disease . This diagnosis not only shocked her and her husband, but also their three children Lydia, Tom and Anna. A test reveals that the eldest daughter Anna, who is currently pregnant with twins, has inherited the Alzheimer's gene . Tom is not affected, Lydia decides against a test.

Alice hides her illness from the outside world and only reveals it when she is asked to talk to the head of her university about complaints from her students. However, her wish to continue teaching for some time is rejected. Alice's memory deteriorates noticeably, and after visiting a home for people with dementia she develops a plan to maintain some self-determination. She records a video in which she orders her future self to swallow the entire contents of a can of medication if she is no longer able to answer simple questions about herself and her family. Alice is increasingly unable to concentrate and, in search of easy reading, comes across her daughter's diary , which she also reads. In conversation with Lydia, she reveals information that can only come from the diary, which makes her daughter angry. The next day Lydia wants to apologize to her mother for the argument, which Alice has already forgotten by this time.

From her doctor Dr. Benjamin is asked Alice to give a speech at an event organized by an association for people with Alzheimer's disease. When Alice reads the prepared text, Lydia advises her to incorporate more personal experiences, since the audience is not a scientist. Alice cannot deal with this criticism at first, but she takes the suggestion to heart and the speech is a complete success. In it she reveals her fears, but also reports on situations that keep her alive.

Alice's husband receives a job offer outside of New York and suggests moving, which he initially rejects at her request. A carer and domestic help is hired to support Alice. By chance, after a Skype conversation with her daughter Lydia , Alice comes across the message from her former self and tries to put it into practice. Just as she is about to swallow the pills, she hears the front door being unlocked, and immediately afterwards the voice of her supervisor Elena. Alice drops the pills in shock and the pills scatter on the tiles in the bathroom.

After Alice's husband, John, decides to take the call to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, but also realizes that his wife is better off staying in her familiar surroundings, Lydia takes on the task of looking after her mother. After a walk, she recites from the play Angels in America and wants to know whether her mother understood what it was about. After a few moments, and with obvious effort, Alice formulates her answer. It consists only of the word "love".
