Lisa Genova

Lisa Genova (born November 22, 1970 ) is an American neuroscientist and writer.

Life

Lisa Genova graduated from Bates College in 1992 in biopsychology as the best of her class and received her PhD in 1998 from Harvard University in neuroscience . After completing her doctorate, she did research in the field of drug addiction. When her grandmother developed Alzheimer's, Genova researched the disease but found only medical literature on it, nothing that helped her better understand her grandmother in this situation. So she decided to write a novel on the subject later.

She married and after the birth of her daughter in 2000 left the job to become a housewife and mother. After the divorce in 2004, she decided not to return to her job, but to write the planned novel. After this novel, Still Alice (dt. My life without yesterday could find an agent), not a publisher, she released him in 2007 despite warnings that this would her career as a writer An End before they have really begun, self-published at iUniverse . In 2009 the work was published by Pocket Books (a publisher of Simon & Schuster ) after very positive reviews . After the great success of Still Alice , she decided to become a full-time writer.

In addition to her novels, Lisa Genova is committed to destigmatizing diseases - especially Alzheimer's and Huntington's - and to educate them about them. For this purpose she appeared on various television programs. She also appeared in the documentary film To Not Fade Away .

She describes herself as divorced happy and lives with her children in Cape Cod ( Massachusetts ).

In line with her academic training, Lisa Genova writes novels about people with neurological diseases or problems. She attaches great importance to describing the emotional world of these people, but also mentions the scientific side.

In Still Alice (dt. My life without Yesterday ) (since the filming Still Alice - My Life Without Yesterday ) of 2009 is about the struggle of the (fictional) Harvard professor Alice Howland with Alzheimer's . The story is told from Alice's point of view.

Genovas second novel Left Neglected (dt. More than half a lifetime ) of 2011 is about Sarah Nick Olsen, a woman who after an accident under the visual Neglect suffering, which means it does not perceive the left side of her field of view; the brain ignores this page so thoroughly that for Sarah it just doesn't exist.

In 2012 she released Love Anthony (Eng. Give love a voice ). It is about a boy with autism who died at the age of eight. His mother withdraws to an island. There she becomes friends with a woman who has thrown her husband out and is now writing a novel. Written about a boy with autism and from his point of view.

In Inside the O'Briens (dt. A good day to live ) (2015) gets a Boston police officer and family man diagnosing Huntington's disease . The story is told not only from his point of view, but also from that of his daughter Katie, who has a 50% chance of also having this incurable disease and has to wonder if she wants to be tested.

2018 appeared Every note Played (dt. In my dreams I hear you play ), a novel about a famous pianist in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ill (ALS). His ex-wife returns to him to take care of him. While he is losing health, the two find reconciliation, with each other and with their adult daughter.

Christine Dunford adapted Mein Leben ohne Gestern 2013 for the theater and staged this adaptation at the Lookingglass Theater in Chicago .

My Life Without Yesterday was filmed in 2014 under the title Still Alice - My Life Without Yesterday by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland with Julianne Moore as Alice. Moore received several awards for her performance in the film, including an Oscar and the Golden Globe .
