Audio film in Germany

The audio film icon

Currently some 1.2 million people are in Germany as a blind or visually impaired and need an additional audio description to information and entertainment programs see to. These image descriptions, called audio descriptions , provide brief explanations of the visual elements of a scene in the dialogue pauses. In Germany, the public broadcasters regularly broadcast audio films. In 1997 there were only eight broadcast dates, in 2010 around 950 audio films were broadcast. In 1997, Bayerischer Rundfunk was, according to its own statements, the first ARD broadcaster to establish a regular offer of programs with audio description and, since 2013, has been creating an audio film version for all of its fictional new productions in the main evening program of the First and for the nature and animal documentaries on Sunday.

The award

Particularly successful contributions with audio description have been awarded the German Audio Film Prize every year since 2002 by the German Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired . The prize, a sculpture by the blind artist Dario Malkowski , is a bronze relief weighing around three kilograms that shows the face of a woman who puts her left hand behind her ear and covers her eyes with her right hand. The figure is named The Listener .

The award was given its own name in 2018 and was christened ADele at the festive gala.
