Landauer - The President is a German television film by the director Hans Steinbichler , which was shown for the first time on October 15, 2014 on Das Erste .

action

The film begins with the victory of the German soccer championship in 1932 by FC Bayern Munich, led by President Kurt Landauer , in the final against Eintracht Frankfurt . Fifteen years later, Landauer returned from exile in Switzerland to war-torn Munich, from where he intended to travel on to New York . He attends the general meeting of his former club, which is about to restructure itself after the forced dissolution of all clubs in the US occupation zone , but does not receive a license from the Allied occupiers to host sporting events. The top management around Sigi Hermann and Conny Heidkamp , who led the club through the war years, spontaneously reappoints Landauer as president. He hesitantly accepts the election and, together with Hermann, tackles the repair of the war-damaged stadium on Grünwalder Strasse . He hires the accountant Inge Streicher, who quickly realizes that the club is facing financial ruin. In order to revive football in the city and save FC Bayern, Landauer is negotiating with the management of local rivals TSV 1860 Munich to host the first football game. His parallel negotiations with the Americans are successful, and both clubs have been granted the license they need to resume normal play. Landauer gives up his plans to emigrate to New York and remains president of FC Bayern until 1951.

background

Ghost settlement in Gladbeck, one of the filming locations

The film was shot from July 16, 2013 to August 24, 2013 in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia .

On the occasion of the Holocaust Remembrance Day, the FC Bayern ultras organized a choreography to commemorate Landauer in the southern curve of the Allianz Arena before the Bundesliga match against Eintracht Frankfurt in February 2014. These recordings are shown with an introductory dedication for 20 seconds as the last scene of the film.

"It was the 'Schickeria' fan group that Kurt Landauer brought back to the world's minds."

Some historical facts and events in the film do not correspond to actual events. For example, the central receipt of the license for gaming operations in 1947, as mentioned in the film store, is a fiction. Football has also been played in Germany since autumn 1945 in the newly organized league , whose founding members included the two large Munich clubs. The stadium on Grünwalder Strasse had also been reopened for games since the summer of 1945. The reconstruction shown in the film with the help of players and members of both clubs did not take place - although at the time requested by the city of Munich.

Reviews

“Josef Bierbichler plays the thoughtful, injured Landau with carefully dosed emotions - in fine contrast to the often too emotionally flaring film music, the only disturbing element in this well-composed production, because a black and white walk through ruins works even without a gloomy cello . "

“Speaking of lions : The best thing is 'Landauer', who manages the balance between hero portrait, football film and post-war document, when Bierbichler and Eisi Gulp (as president from 1860) two character actors of the first division attack each other. [...] Another joy: the film sheds light on the Jewish roots of FC Bayern and reminds us that without Kurt Landauer Uli Hoeneß 'work would not have been possible. "
