Dario Malkowski

Dario Malkowski (born June 14, 1926 in Schönebeck (Elbe) ; † December 13, 2017 ) was a German sculptor and ceramist .

life and work

During the Second World War , Dario Malkowski lost his eyesight to a grenade at the age of 18 in 1944 and became a war blind . After the end of the war, Malkowski initially trained as a wood carver . He then studied from 1949 to 1953 in Magdeburg at the College of Applied Arts and the Leipzig School of the same name .

Malkowski produced works for the Blind Association of the German Democratic Republic and the German Central Library for the Blind in Leipzig . In 1953 Der reading Blinde was created for the latter .

Seeing hands through Louis Braille is another work by Malkowski. Likewise, the bronze sculpture Book of Life , which is in the Library of Congress for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Washington .

The Braille Museum in Paris also has a bust of Louis Braille created by Dario Malkowski .

Hand with laurel

Dario Malkowski made the bronze relief by hand with laurel . This shows a hand holding two laurel branches. The hand with laurel is reminiscent of antiquity , in which the laurel wreath served as a prize in athletic or artistic competitions. The relief was created on the occasion of the fiftieth award of the war blind radio play award in 2001. Since 2002, the hand with laurel has been awarded to the Laureates of the War Blind Prize as an honorary prize.

Awards

In 2004, Wolfgang Böhmer awarded Dario Malkowski the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon . In 2011 he became an honorary citizen of the city of Schönebeck (Elbe).
