The Association of War Blind Germany e. V. ( BKD ) is a self-help association. The federal government is known to the public for the award of the war blind radio play award . He belongs u. a. the World Blind Union .

history

The Association of War Blind Germany e. V. (BKD) was founded in 1949 and is the successor organization to the Association of Blind Warriors established in Berlin in 1916 . This makes the federal government the oldest German war victims organization. The first chairman of the Federation was Peter Plein . Its long-time federal chairman was Franz Sonntag (1965–1996).

The BKD is primarily committed to social policy and guarantees federal health care . The BKD also maintains sanatoriums for the blind in Bad Pyrmont and Brilon.

The Union of War Blind Germany has naturally had declining membership numbers for years: while in 2005 1262 war blind and 1760 comrade widows / widowers were members, these numbers fell to 681 and 1,192 by the end of 2010, and by the end of 2015 to 371 war blind and 695 comrade widows and widowers. In January 2017 there were still 328 war blind members and 602 comrade widows / widowers, in January 2018 288 war blind people and 522 comrade widows / widowers. At the turn of the year 2018/2019 there were 260 war blind and 460 widows / widowers, at the end of 2019 there were still 222 war blind and 382 comrade widows / widowers.
