Maximilian Skiba

Maximilian Skiba (* December 24, 1922 in Hamburg ; † November 19, 2019 ) was 1st Chairman of the North Regional Association of the Association of War Blind Germany (BKD) . He was a bearer of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

biography

During the Second World War , at the age of 19, Maximilian Skiba lost his eyesight as a soldier off Leningrad due to a cross shot. The first aid after the wounding took place in the Air Force hospital in Pleskau . From there Maximilian Skiba came to East Prussia , Troppau in the Sudetenland , Berlin , Troppau again and in May 1945 finally back to his native Hamburg.

In the Hanseatic city Maximilian Skiba was in the Wandsbek Douaumont barracks medical treatment. The barracks was a gathering place for the war blind from Northern Germany . Skiba was a member of Hamburger SV and had played a few games in the Gauliga as a footballer .

Voluntary work

Maximilian Skiba, who had trained as an organist during his stay in Berlin at the Mohr Conservatory until it was destroyed by bombing in 1943 , organized the artistic support for the soldiers in the Douaumont barracks.

In addition, he worked in Hamburg as a braille teacher in the so-called Bern Castle .

In 1954 Maximilian Skiba founded a war blind rowing team that lasted 25 years. Because of the dark glasses of its members, it was nicknamed the Zahrah Leander Vierer ; the artist Zarah Leander showed a preference for dark glasses.

From 1971 to 2012 he was a member of the jury that awards the war blind radio play award.

After the end of the Second World War in Hamburg, Maximilian Skiba was one of the founding members of the Association of War Blind. The war blind organized themselves separately from the civil blind in order to jointly assert their pension claims against state organs. In the course of his work for the Bund der Kriegsblinden he developed into an expert on social law . He was also the chairman of the self-help association of the Hamburg war blind.

For more than two decades, Maximilian Skiba was an honorary judge at the Hamburg Regional Social Court .

Professional activities

Professionally, Maximilian Skiba, who had completed a commercial training before he was wounded , worked as an apprentice trainer at Deutsches Ring .

He held the office of the severely disabled person's representative and was a member of the Supervisory Board as an employee representative for twelve years .

Awards

On January 17, 2012, Maximilian Skiba was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit for his more than 60 years commitment to the Bund der Kriegsblinden Deutschlands eV (BKD) . His wife, Birgitta Skiba, received the Federal Medal of Merit .
