action
The anesthetist Sibylle Langhoff lives a seemingly happy life with her husband Lars and their two children Maike and Piet, but that is deceptive. The young woman is depressed and doesn't know what to do with life.
On a sunny day, she moves 14-year-old Maike and 7-year-old Piet out with friends and kills herself. Her husband Lars, a landscape architect, receives a delayed email from Sibylle the next morning and finds her dead in a clearing in the forest. When he tells the children, they are initially deeply shocked. Maike learns that her mother has killed herself, blames herself, but also begins to question her mother's love for her. She looks for a reason and thinks that her father had a relationship with the helpful neighbor Petra. Piet, on the other hand, is told that his mother was just sick, but he hears suicide rumors at school and begins to imagine his mother's presence. Meanwhile, Lars is preparing the funeral with his sister Ruth and suppressing his self-reproaches.
At Sibylle's funeral, emotions discharge when Ruth reads a poem. At the same time, while Piet finds out that his mother has killed herself while playing hide and seek under his grandparents' table. When he later confronts his father and sister with it and asks why, they both think that there was actually none.
Finally, the three of the family find their way back to normal; Piet no longer puts four plates on the dining table, but only three.

Reviews
“The (television) drama vividly depicts how much the family structure is in imbalance and how grief, self-reproach and anger troubles the bereaved. To overcome the crisis, they have to break new ground, clear up misunderstandings and practice new ways of dealing with one another. "
"In the past, director Johannes Fabrick has already proven many times that he is a master of dramatic material [...] Here, based on the script by Dorothee Schön [...], he staged a remarkable family drama that sensitively and sensitively deals with the suicide of a loved one lifelike themed. Fabrick once again engaged the brilliantly performing Wotan Wilke Möhring for the main role [...] The acting performances of Matilda Merkel and Nick Julius Schuck in the roles of the two children are also outstanding "
"With his psychologically sensitive handwriting, director Johannes Fabrick creates the necessary atmosphere so that the viewer does not miss the small miniatures of the script despite the force of the topic."
“Not much happens dramatically: the rituals that keep mourners on their toes and keep them functioning are shown. […] How formidable the direction really is can also be seen in the two children. Matilda Merkel and Nick Julius Schuck play their difficult roles excellently. "
“Screenwriter Dorothee Schön and director Johannes Fabrick managed to put the family drama into a good tone. The ARD film describes the days after the suicide. Not too tearful, not too fake, not too melodramatic, but just as sad and gripping as such an event is. [...] It is this desperation of such a strangled family that the ARD production impressively demonstrates. "
