action
Jesper is a captain in the Bundeswehr. Although his brother died during a mission in Afghanistan, he reports again for military service in the crisis-ridden country. The task of his troops is to protect a small, remote village from the Taliban, who are increasingly gaining influence in this region. The soldiers are supported by the young Afghan interpreter Tarik .
Jesper tries, with Tarik's help, to win the trust of the village community and the allied Afghan militias, but the gap between the cultures is large. But Tarik and Jesper become friends - which is why Jesper soon finds himself in a loyalty conflict, since he is always between his conscience and the orders of his superiors.
Tarik, who is threatened by the Taliban because of his work for the Germans, receives permission from the mayor of the village to take his sister Nala from the city to the small fort of the Germans and Afghanis, in order to place her under the supervision of the German outpost .
On the way to the fort, Nala and Tarik are shot off a motorcycle from a passing car. Tarik remains unharmed, Nala is critically wounded. Tarik carries his sister to the fort. Jesper is refused permission to bring the seriously injured Afghani to the German military hospital.
He decides to take Nala there anyway and uses the mayor's pickup truck. She is operated on and healed. During his absence, his deputy decides to go back to the base. The German soldiers are ambushed and the deputy is killed. Jesper then comes to court for his breach of duty and is released from military service. Tarik resumes his job as a language teacher. The final picture shows how he stops on his motorcycle in front of a train gate. A car drives next to him and also stops. When the barrier opens the way, a shot is fired.

Reviews
"The on-site shooting - Kunduz and Mazar-i-Sharif - gave Feo Aladag's film a wealth of detail, especially in the depiction of the everyday life of the locals and soldiers in a permanent state of exception, which has rarely been seen."
“ Between Worlds sparked great enthusiasm in the competition at the Berlinale. ... A first-class staged film. ... The director works out the human and cultural tensions with extreme precision. "
“With all the adventures of the tough setting, with all the impressive breaking into and breaking into the doubly exotic male world of the military and Islam, Feo Aladag hardly takes any risks. And so there is something strangely sterile about her film, despite the dust and sweat and the lack of courage to die. "
