Would you rather be dead is a German documentary by Christina Zealand from 2010 . It shows the lives of six people with a severe disability as well as their relatives, friends and nursing staff .

action

Zealand shows the lives of the six people and describes how they deal with their fate. The couple Jan and Susanne and Rosi need a wheelchair to move around , as does Corinna, who suffered a stroke three years ago . Thomas is bedridden after suffering from multiple sclerosis . The sixth protagonist , Stephan, was seriously injured in a car accident ten years ago and has been in a world between coma and consciousness ever since . They all live in the facility for disabled people in Hamburg .

Production and Background

The film was shot by Fortune Cookie Filmproduktion on behalf of ZDF with the support of the Hamburg Cultural Foundation in Hamburg and the surrounding area. The trigger for the film was Seeland's 15-year work in the care sector. There she was confronted with comments such as “50 percent of the disabled people living in residential facilities would definitely prefer to be dead”. To get to the bottom of this statement, she accompanied the six protagonists of her film. It became clear to her, "how diverse, interesting and valuable life is for each individual".

Awards

In 2011, Seeland received the German Television Award for best documentary for her film .

criticism

"The result is a relentlessly open, lovable, humorous picture of seriously ill people that does not gloss over but makes beauty visible."

"Better dead than disabled? Seriously ill people answer the question of the film's title with touching honesty. Christina Seeland accompanies six severely disabled people in her debut film. "
