Kleisthaus
The Kleisthaus is a listed building at Mauerstraße 53 in Berlin-Mitte .
History of the building
The Kleisthaus was designed in 1912 by the German architect Bodo Ebhardt as the headquarters of the von der Heydt banking company . Ebhardt is considered one of the most successful architects in Germany at the turn of the century . The name of the building is reminiscent of Heinrich von Kleist , who rented an apartment in the building previously located at this point from 1810 until his suicide in November 1811. Today's Kleisthaus was used by the bank company until 1936, after which the Deutsche Landesbankenzentral moved in, which resided there until 1942. In 1943 the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda took over the building. After the Second World War the house was u. a. used by the German Red Cross to provide shelter for refugees. This was followed by a long period in which the building was empty. After a reconstruction, the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs finally moved in .
architecture
The building is a typical structure, which is reminiscent of the re-emerging neoclassicism of this time. The facade was clad with shell limestone and decorated with reliefs by the figurative sculptor Georg Kolbe . One shows Kleist, another shows an Amazon . A striking feature of the building is the central projection , which is supported by pilasters . The ground floor is a typical for this building rustication designed. After the fall of the Wall , the building had to be renovated. The renovation was carried out under the leadership of the architect Josef Paul Kleihues .
Function of the building
Since March 2001 the Kleisthaus has been the seat of the Federal Government Commissioner for the Issues of Disabled People , who had the building converted. Since then, it has been a cultural and meeting place that is to be used for people with and without disabilities .

The Kleisthaus is connected to public transport via the U6 and U2 underground lines with the Stadtmitte or Mohrenstraße stops . You can also take the Kanzlerbahn U55 ( Brandenburger Tor stop ).
