Federal Government Commissioner for the Issues of People with Disabilities

The Federal Government Commissioner for the Issues of People with Disabilities (previously the Federal Government Commissioner for the Issues of People with Disabilities until 2016 ) is the central point of contact at the Federal Government in all matters affecting people with disabilities . The honorary office was proclaimed in 1981, the International Year of the Disabled , by the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt . The commissioner is appointed by the federal government for the duration of a legislative period ( Section 17 of the Disability Equality Act ).

Legal mandate

The tasks and powers of the commissioner are regulated by the law on equality of disabled people, which came into force on May 1st, 2002 (Disabled Equal Opportunities Act - BGG) .

The agent

  • maintains close contact with disabled people, their associations and organizations , with providers and providers of participation services and with many social groups and other organizations in which people with disabilities work
  • works to ensure that the federal government's responsibility to ensure equal living conditions for people with and without disabilities is fulfilled in all areas of social life
  • is involved in all legal, ordinance and other important projects of the federal ministries , insofar as these deal with or affect questions of the integration of disabled people
  • advocates that the different living conditions of disabled people are taken into account and that gender-specific disadvantages are eliminated
