The Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Issues is an office that has existed since the 1970s. It is based in the Federal Ministry of Justice .

tasks

The Commissioner's tasks include representing the Federal Government before the European Court of Human Rights in its function as authorized representative and monitoring the consistent implementation of decisions by the Court of Justice in Germany. The Commissioner is involved in the various bodies and committees of the United Nations, the European Union and the Council of Europe to improve the global protection of human rights. The agent is u. a. Liaison officer for the European Fundamental Rights Agency and member of the board of trustees of the German Institute for Human Rights .

In addition, the Commissioner continuously works on the further development of human rights conventions of the Council of Europe and the United Nations and prepares state reports that show which measures Germany has implemented to fulfill its contractual obligations.

Since December 2004 the office has been exercised by Almut Wittling-Vogel , who since September 1, 2011 has also headed the new sub-department for human rights, EU policy issues and international law at the BMJ.
