The Commissioner for Franco-German Cooperation is on behalf of the Federal Government responsible for promoting joint initiatives with the French Republic in the interests of Franco-German friendship .

The joint declaration on the 40th anniversary of the Élysée Treaties approved the appointment of a representative in both countries to better coordinate their joint work. This should report directly to the Chancellor / Prime Minister and have resources in the Foreign Ministry.
