The Federal Government Commissioner for the New Federal States (formerly Federal Government Commissioner for the Affairs of the New States ), or East Commissioner of the Federal Government for short , has been carried out by the Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Marco Wanderwitz (CDU) since February 2020 . In 2017, the commissioner commissioned the Göttingen democracy researcher Franz Walter with a study on " Right-wing extremism and xenophobia in East Germany", from which she distanced herself in July 2017. The study was sharply criticized due to methodological deficiencies.
