Honored Health Care Worker

The honorary title of Honored health care workers of the German Democratic Republic was a state award from the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the form of a medal on January 17 in 1985 by the Council of Ministers of the GDR by its chairman Willi Stoph and the Minister of Health Ludwig Mecklinger donated has been. The honorary title could be awarded for many years of excellent performance and exemplary commitment in socialist health and social services, for excellent results in the socialist competition for high quality and effectiveness of medical and social care and its material and technical security, and also for exemplary performance in preventive health protection . The honorary title, which was limited to 50 awards per year, could only be awarded to individuals. A multiple award was excluded. The award ceremony took place every year on December 11th, the day of health care in the GDR, by the Minister of Health. In addition to the medal, each recipient received a certificate and a premium of 5,000 marks.

Authorization to propose

Entitled to make proposals were:

  • the heads of the organs, companies and institutions subordinate to the Minister of Health,
  • the ministers and heads of the central state organs to which medical institutions were subordinate,
  • the President of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR,
  • the chairmen of the district councils,
  • the health care specialist in Wismut,
  • the Board of the Healthcare Union

The proposals submitted, which should lead to the award of the honorary title, had to be submitted to the Ministry of Health Care by August 1st of each year in agreement with the responsible union boards or their management . The final decision was then made by the Minister of Health in agreement with the Central Board of the Health Union.

Appearance and wearing style

The gold-plated medal with a diameter of 30 mm shows the raised, embossed six-line inscription in the center of its obverse : MERIT / EMPLOYEE / DES / GESUNDHEITS- / WESENS / DER DDR , which is enclosed by two open laurel branches that are crossed at the bottom and bent upwards. The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the GDR's national coat of arms. The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a rectangular, blue-covered clasp, which is closed by a white vertical hem. In addition, a white, also vertical 4 mm wide central stripe has been woven in. The interim brace is of the same quality.
