The Germany Trade and Invest - Company for foreign trade and location marketing mbH ( GTAI ), since 1 January 2009, the successor to the Federal Office for Foreign Trade ( bfai ) is a GmbH , which is fully owned by the Federation; it is assigned to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy .

The GTAI do marketing for the location Germany. In addition, there is the recruitment of investors and the provision of foreign trade information for companies based in Germany. Its headquarters are in Berlin, and there is also a branch in Bonn.

The information offered by the gtai ranges from the presentation of the economic situation and developments worldwide to industry trends, legal and customs regulations. Information on investment and development projects is also provided. Companies receive information on tenders and business and cooperation requests from foreign potential partners. Information is obtained from a network of correspondents deployed around the world at more than 50 locations as well as country, legal, tax and customs experts at the Bonn location.

Most of the information is distributed free of charge via the Internet, e-mail services, brochures and magazines. The company also looks after the foreign trade portal iXPOS .

Emergence

The company was founded in 1951 as the Federal Agency for Foreign Trade and was renamed the Federal Agency for Foreign Trade Information based in Cologne in 1953 . In 1960 the Gesellschaft für Außenhandelsinformationen mbH (GfAI) was founded as a subsidiary of the Federal Office for Foreign Trade Information (BfA). All foreign correspondents reporting for the BfA were employed by this company from then on.

From 1971 a "three-pillar concept" was practiced in German foreign trade: diplomatic missions , chambers of foreign trade (AHKs) and the Federal Office for Foreign Trade Information . In the course of reunification , the Center for the Support of Foreign Investors (ZfA) was founded in 1991. It was assigned to the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) and informed and advised foreign investors about local conditions and possible funding measures in the new federal states .

From 1995 the center became active throughout Germany. In 1998 the federal government appointed a commissioner for foreign investments in Germany. To support him, the Society for the Support of the Commissioner for Foreign Investments mbH was founded, which performed operational tasks. Two years later, the commissioner for foreign investments in Germany was assigned the tasks and resources of the ZfA.

In 2001, the Federal Agency for Foreign Trade Information (BfAI) was renamed the Federal Agency for Foreign Trade (BfAI). In 2003 the company was renamed Invest in Germany GmbH to support the representative for foreign investments . Invest in Germany was the official location marketing agency for foreign investments, while the Federal Agency for Foreign Trade promoted exports. On January 1, 2009, the new business development agency of the Federal Republic of Germany was created through the merger of the Federal Agency for Foreign Trade (bfai) and Invest in Germany GmbH.

Structure and staff

Jürgen Friedrich and Robert Hermann are managing directors. The Supervisory Board is headed by State Secretary Ulrich Nussbaum , who is represented by Christian Hirte , Parliamentary State Secretary and Federal Government Commissioner for the new federal states .

The company currently has over 300 employees, 60 of whom are abroad.
