Public offices

From 1986 to 1991 he was parish councilor of the evangelical Petrusgemeinde Kröllwitz . In 1990 he was head of department in the Halle (Saale) district administration authority .

After the Prime Minister Werner Münch resigned in December 1993 because of an affair about allegedly too high ministerial salaries, Bergner was elected Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt on December 2, 1993 . He received 60 votes in the vote in the state parliament, six more than would have been necessary for an absolute majority. Only 83 of the 106 MPs took part in the election. 19 members of the SPD and two non-attached parliamentarians did not take part in the vote.

In the state elections in June 1994 , his coalition partner FDP failed because of the five percent hurdle and the CDU only received 34.4 percent of the vote, 4.6 percentage points less than in the previous election in October 1990 . His successor in office on July 21, 1994 was the SPD candidate Reinhard Höppner , whose SPD had grown by 8.0 percentage points to 34.0 percent. engagement

Christoph Bergner is a member and chairman of several associations.

Political priorities

  • Educational policy

Bergner's political career in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt began as the education policy spokesman for his parliamentary group. He dedicated himself in particular to university renewal after the collapse of the GDR. A topic that remains from this time is the problem of the so-called " gap professors ".

  • Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide

Bergner attracted federal political and European attention in 2005 with the motion to the Bundestag that he initiated to outlaw the genocide of the Armenians on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the events. No German parliament had dealt with this issue since 1916. The "Armenian motion" triggered strong debates in Turkey and in the German-Turkish community, which contributed to the fact that the motion was accepted by the German Bundestag without a dissenting vote. One week before the 100th day of remembrance, Bergner spoke out in favor of naming the events as genocide ( "... I am against any attempt to avoid the term genocide in the application text in order to paint a trivializing picture of the events 100 years ago" Shortly afterwards, the coalition factions and the federal government included the term 'genocide' in the motion for a resolution , which the Bundestag will vote on on the 100th anniversary of the commemoration.

  • Minority policy

For many years his work focused on the concerns of the four national minorities in Germany as well as the German minorities in Eastern and Central Eastern Europe and states of the former Soviet Union as well as the repatriates and ethnic German repatriates . In this area of work, he headed bilateral government commissions and created further discussion forums to improve the minority situation. For example, the establishment of the round table with the Republic of Poland on issues relating to national minorities can be traced back to his initiative.

criticism

  • Bergner is criticized because of his membership in the CDU of the GDR from 1971. He himself justified his entry into the CDU as an opportunity to protect himself from the desired entry into the SED. In this context, he defended the reappraisal of his party's block party history.
  • Bergner has repeatedly attracted attention because of his views on the complete equality of the registered civil partnership with marriage, as well as because of his general views regarding the homosexual minorities. At an election campaign event in Halle, Bergner is said to have said in summer 2009 that the higher suicide rate among homosexuals was due to disorders in personal development. The LSVD asked Bergner to distance himself from these "scandalous" statements. Hendrik Lange accused Bergner of not having properly informed himself. Rather, the increased risk of suicide is due to the high level of intolerance in the population. Bergner himself repeatedly contradicted this representation to his statement, which is reproduced in abbreviated form. In January 2014, he came under the spotlight of critical media coverage because he was a member of the board of trustees of the Society for Life Orientation - "Leo eV", which was accused of offering seminars on the healing of homosexual people in Saxony-Anhalt. A representation that the association itself contradicts.
