Holger Stahlknecht (born November 13, 1964 in Hanover ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He has been Minister of the Interior of the State of Saxony-Anhalt since April 19, 2011, and State Chairman of the CDU Saxony-Anhalt since November 2018 . He has been a member of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt since 2002.

Life and work

After graduating from high school, Stahlknecht took up service in the German Armed Forces in 1985 , which he finished as a reserve officer in 1987. After studying law (1987–1992) at the University of Osnabrück and the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and taking both state exams, he was employed in the judicial service of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, where he worked as a public prosecutor at the Magdeburg Public Prosecutor from 1995 to 2002 , u. a. in a department for white collar crime. He gives lectures on "German Law" at the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences.

Holger Stahlknecht is married and has two children.

Holger Stahlknecht joined the CDU in 2000. From 2005 to 2006 he was district chairman of the CDU of the Ohrekreis and has been district chairman of the CDU of the Börde district since January 1, 2007 . He is chairman of the regional working group for Christian Democratic Lawyers .

Stahlknecht has been a member of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt since the 4th electoral term and was elected in constituency 8 ( Wolmirstedt ). From 2006 to April 2011 he was deputy chairman of the CDU parliamentary group and a member of the council of elders . He was also mayor of the former community of Wellen from 1999 to 2009 and was local mayor there until April 18, 2011.

At the end of June 2010 he came into conflict with parts of his party when it became known that he was representing Lothar Finzelberg, who was suspected of bribery, as a lawyer .

On April 19, 2011 Stahlknecht became the new Interior Minister of Saxony-Anhalt in the Haseloff I cabinet . As Minister of the Interior, against the will of his parliamentary group, he introduced mandatory identification for police officers in the office and on patrol duty .

As deputy state chairman of his party, he was in talks for the top candidacy in the state elections in spring 2016 , but in December 2014 he supported a renewed candidacy by Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff .

At the state party conference on November 17, 2018, Stahlknecht was elected as the new state chairman of the CDU Saxony-Anhalt with 186 of 221 votes .
