Holger Hövelmann (born July 12, 1967 in Roßlau ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2006 to April 2011 he was Interior Minister of the State of Saxony-Anhalt and from 2004 to 2009 State Chairman of the SPD in Saxony-Anhalt.

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1986, Hövelmann studied at the officers' college of the land forces of the NVA in Zittau as a political officer student . He completed his studies in 1990 as a political scientist.

Before his election as SPD state chairman, he did not explain the nature of his studies as a political scientist. From October 2004 to December 2009 he was the SPD state chief in Saxony-Anhalt. In the nineties he was employed by the district of Zerbst . From 1993 to 2001 he was managing director of the ÖTV district administration in Anhalt.

Holger Hövelmann is married and has two daughters.

Political party

Hövelmann was a member of the SED for 13 months .

He has been a member of the SPD since 1993. From 1995 to 2004 Hövelmann was chairman of the SPD district association Anhalt-Zerbst . In October 2004 he was elected chairman of the SPD regional association of Saxony-Anhalt with a majority of one vote in a fight against Gerhard Miesterfeldt . Since then, he has been re-elected twice (in November 2006 and in October 2008) with a large majority, with no opposing candidates. On December 19, 2009, at a special party conference, he lost the vote for the state chairmanship against Katrin Budde with 60 to 41 votes.

Holger Hövelmann initially did not admit his former SED membership within the party, which sparked discussions in the run-up to the SPD state party conference in 2004. This also applied to the statement that he was studying political science without any indication that he had been training to become a political officer before 1989.

MP

From 1994 to 2001 Hovelmann belonged to the council of the district Anhalt-Zerbst and was here at this time also chairman of the SPD faction . Hövelmann was elected to the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt (6th legislative period) on March 20, 2011 via the SPD state list.

From 2001 to 2006 Hövelmann was district administrator for the Anhalt-Zerbst district.

After the state elections in 2006, Hövelmann was appointed Minister of the Interior in the state government of Saxony-Anhalt led by Prime Minister Wolfgang Böhmer on April 24, 2006 .

In June 2008, Hövelmann announced that a visit to a Nazi memorial should be made mandatory for schoolchildren in order to combat right-wing extremist ideas.

criticism

The fact that Hövelmann was the keynote speaker at a memorial event in Marienborn on the 45th anniversary of the construction of the Wall was criticized. Because of Hövelmann's past as a political officer student, the citizens' committee, CDU politicians and an FDP member of the Bundestag canceled their participation in the memorial event. The FDP parliamentary group chairman in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt, Karl-Heinz Paqué, called Hövelmann's appearance a "disrespect for German history". Hövelmann himself said in 2006, referring to his past as an NVA political officer student: "With what I have done so far, I have nothing to be ashamed of or to apologize for."

After Hövelmann had criticized the decisions of some courts in public, the judges' association of the state of Saxony-Anhalt complained in March 2007 about these attempts by the interior minister to interfere in the work of the judiciary.
