Katrin Budde (born April 13, 1965 in Magdeburg ) is a German politician ( SPD ). She was a member of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament from 1990 to 2017 and chairwoman of the SPD parliamentary group there from 2006 to March 2016. From the end of 2009 to March 2016 she was also state chairwoman of the SPD Saxony-Anhalt . As the top candidate of her party in the state elections in March 2016 , she resigned from her offices after the poor result. In 2017 she was elected to the German Bundestag , where she belongs to the left wing of the SPD .

Family, education and work

After graduating from high school in 1983, she began an internship in what was then VEB Schwermaschinenbau "Karl Liebknecht" in Magdeburg. From 1984 to 1989 she studied at the Technical University of Magdeburg (from 1987 Technical University), from which she graduated as a graduate engineer for work design . She then worked as a research assistant at VEB FER (research, development, rationalization) until 1990 .

Budde is married, Roman Catholic, and has two children.

Political career

In 1989 she joined the Social Democratic Party of the GDR (SDP). From 1994 to 2002 Katrin Budde ran directly as Vice Chairwoman; From 2002 to 2006 she was a member of the SPD state executive committee of Saxony-Anhalt as an assessor; from 2006 she was again deputy chairwoman.  

On December 19, 2009, Katrin Budde was elected the new state chairman of the SPD Saxony-Anhalt with 60 out of 102 votes at a special party congress and thus prevailed against the previous chairman Holger Hövelmann (41 votes).

In January 2015, Katrin Budde was unanimously nominated by the state executive of her party as the top candidate for the state elections in spring 2016 and announced that she would go into the election campaign without a coalition statement. On March 8, she was elected top candidate by a special party conference with 350 to six votes. She ruled out moving to the cabinet as a junior partner in a coalition with the Left Party, but relies on becoming the strongest force.

At the SPD state party conference in September 2015, Budde, who ran as the only candidate, was confirmed in office with 79%.

Magdeburg Mayor Lutz Trümper , formerly SPD, threw Budde in October 2015 publicly that it did him suggested, not to say in the refugee issue his opinion. Trümper, who sees himself in agreement with the positions of the SPD chairman Sigmar Gabriel and the Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on this issue , then resigned from the SPD (until June 2017).

One day after the state elections on March 13, 2016 , Katrin Budde resigned as state chairman and chairwoman of the SPD parliamentary group in the state parliament because of the high losses of her party.

MPs

From 1990 to 2017 Budde was a member of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt . Here she was from 1994 to 2001 and from 2002 to 2006 deputy parliamentary group leader of the SPD parliamentary group . Budde was unable to prevail in the state elections from 2002 to 2016 in the south of Magdeburg ( Magdeburg IV constituency ) against the candidates from the CDU or DIE LINKE and entered the state parliament via their party's state list.

As SPD parliamentary group leader in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament from 2006 to March 2016, she was a member of the council of elders. After the poor performance of the SPD in the state elections in 2016, Budde was replaced by Andreas Steppuhn as parliamentary group leader on March 15, 2016 .

In the 2017 federal election , she ran both as a direct candidate in the Mansfeld constituency and via the SPD's state list . She entered the 19th German Bundestag via the state list . In the Bundestag she is a full member of the Committee on Culture and the Media and the Defense Committee . Budde is also a deputy member of the Committee on Food and Agriculture .

Public offices

After Matthias Gabriel resigned in 2001, Katrin Budde became Minister for Economics and Technology of the State of Saxony-Anhalt in the state government led by Prime Minister Reinhard Höppner ( Höppner II cabinet ). Since the Magdeburg model had lost its majority in the 2002 state elections, Katrin Budde resigned on May 16, 2002. On January 30, 2018, Katrin Budde was elected Chairwoman of the Committee for Culture and Media of the 19th German Bundestag.
