Matthias Gabriel

Matthias Gabriel (born March 13, 1953 in Halle (Saale) , GDR ) is a former German politician ( SPD ). From 1999 to 2001 he was Economics Minister of Saxony-Anhalt .

Life and work

Gabriel grew up in Halberstadt . After graduating from high school in East Berlin , he studied accounting and statistics. From 1977 to 1980 he worked in the commercial administration of pharmacies in the districts of Halberstadt and Oschersleben . He then worked as an administrative manager at a church social institution, where he mainly developed IT programs for church health and social institutions. After retiring from active politics, he switched to the private sector and in May 2001 became a member of the management of PD Chemie-Park Bitterfeld / Wolfen GmbH .

Political party

During the political change in the GDR , Gabriel joined the New Forum in 1989 . He later switched to the SPD, which he left in 2001, but which he rejoined in November 2014.

Public offices

Gabriel had been mayor of Halberstadt since June 1990 and was mayor there from 1994 to 1996. In March 1996 he moved to the Saxony-Anhalt Ministry of Economics, Technology and European Affairs as State Secretary. After Klaus Schucht's resignation , on February 1, 1999, he was appointed Minister of Economics and Technology to the government of the State of Saxony-Anhalt led by Prime Minister Reinhard Höppner . Due to differences to the positions of the state government, he resigned from his office on January 31, 2001 and was replaced in this position by Katrin Budde . In an interview he complained about the lethargy of the unemployed and called for the Solidar Pact , the special funding for the new federal states, to expire, although the state government was negotiating an extension (Solidar Pact II).
