Immediately after his re-appointment as interior minister in June 2020 fell Grote in criticism because in he club in the Port City despite the force at that time in Hamburg restrictions and prohibitions for celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic a private party ( " Corona Party “) Celebrated on the occasion of his confirmation and only apologized afterwards when asked. The CDU , the Left and AfD therefore demanded Grotes' immediate resignation . The responsible fines office in Hamburg initiated proceedings against Grote because of possible violations of the rules . In August 2020, the authorities found that Senator for the Interior Grote had violated the Corona Containment Ordinance of the Senate, of which he was a member, and that he had organized a "prohibited private gathering" with his standing reception, which is why he was fined 1,000 euros was imposed. Tschentscher did not comply with this demand and left Grote in office.

Based on Grote's “Corona Party” affair , the term “groten” established itself in the Hamburg party scene for holding celebrations while ignoring all distance requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic. Grote was also referred to in public as “Hamburg's Party Senator”.

Controversial house search for insult

In September 2021, Grote again came into the focus of a public discussion after the Hamburg police carried out a house search in an apartment in the St. Pauli district at 6 a.m. in order to secure possible storage media such as the smartphone of a resident registered there allegedly offended on Twitter . The starting point was his own tweet Grotes in May 2021, in which he accused the celebrating masses in the Schanzenviertel , who had violated the Corona distance rules, “ignorance” and “stupid action”. Among them, the accused had labeled Grote in a comment as " dick ". Due to a later filed criminal complaint by Grote, an investigation into the insult was triggered, including the house search by six officers. In public, the proportionality of these police measures was also questioned because of Grote's own violations of corona rules and his refusal to publicly admit them despite the fine , especially since the accused had already admitted to operating the Twitter account in question at a police summons, and he had been promised a discontinuation of the proceedings on the grounds of triviality . The entire incident came to be known as the so-called “dick gate ” or “ dick affair”.
