Srpski Itebej ( Kyr. Српски Итебеј, German Ittebe ) is a place in the municipality of Žitište in the Serbian district of Srednji Banat . It is located in the autonomous province of Vojvodina in Serbia, about five kilometers from the border with Romania . The population is predominantly Serbian. To the south of Srpski Itebej lies Novi Itebej , Hungarian Magyarittabé, which is inhabited by the majority of Protestant Hungarians .
geography
The place is located in the Serbian Banat in a fertile low plain about 70 meters above sea level. Agriculture is, due to the very fertile soil, the main source of income for the place. There is a temperate continental climate. The place is located on the Begej River , also called Begejski Kanal, a waterway that connects the Serbian city of Zrenjanin with the Romanian city of Timișoara . After it was initially closed in 1967, the canal was expanded and has been navigable again since 2011.
history
Srpski Itebej was settled again in the 18th century at the initiative of Empress Maria Theresa , after the area of the entire Vojvodina was generally deserted after the Ottoman invasions for several centuries. The earlier settlement on which the current one is based was mentioned for the first time in 1221. The 800 year old document is kept in the Hungarian State Archives in Budapest . The name Itebej probably goes back to the lord of the town Ittebői István .
religion
The majority of the population of the village belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Church. But there are also Roman Catholic Christians in Srpski Itebej. The Serbian Orthodox parish church of St. Sava and Simeon in the village was built between 1765 and 1769. There is also a Roman Catholic church in the village .
As well as two Serbian Orthodox chapels. The small chapel of St. Great Martyr George in the Serbian Orthodox cemetery of the village, built from 1923 to 1925 . And the chapel of St. Venerable Mother Petka Paraskeva from 1912.
