The Hungarian State Archives ( Hungarian Magyar Országos Levéltár , MOL ) is the central archive of the historical Hungarian estates and the Republic of Hungary . It was founded in Pressburg in 1756 and is today with its central building and two outbuildings in the castle district of the Hungarian capital Budapest .

Locations

The main building (Building 1) of the Hungarian State Archives was built in 1923 according to plans by Samu Pecz in the historicism style.

  • Building 1 at Wiener-Tor-Platz ( Bécsi kapu tér ) 2-4 for the archive sections for departments I., II. And III.
  • Building 2 at Hess András Platz ( Hess András tér ) 5 for the archive sections for Department V.
  • Building 3 on Külső-Bécsi Street ( Lángliliom utca ) 4 for the archive sections for departments IV., VI. and the microfilm collection

Departments

I. Written material of the central and regional government organs 1526–1867

These include the archives of the Hungarian Court Chancellery (1414–1848) and the Transylvanian Court Chancellery (1686–1848), the archive of the Hungarian Lieutenancy Council , archives from the time of the freedom struggles of Thököly and Rákóczi (1648–1714), the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/1849 , and neo-absolutism (1848–1867), as well as archives of the Hungarian Chambers and the Transylvanian state authorities.

II. Documents of the government organs 1867–1945

These include the archives of the government authorities 1867–1918 and files of the government organs of the Soviet Republic (1919).

III. Family archives and collections

This includes the collection of photocopies of Hungarian literature of the Middle Ages (especially the "Hungarica"), archives of families (amongst others Bethlen , Esterházy , Festetics , Nádasdy , and Széchenyi ), corporations and institutes as well as a collection of cards, plans and seals.

V. Department of the Writings of the Central Political Authorities 1945–1989

These include the files of the Party of Hungarian Working People (MDP) and the Hungarian Socialist Workers Party (MSZMP) 1948–1989
