Christian Baldauf (born August 9, 1967 in Frankenthal ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He has been a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament since 2001 , where he is parliamentary group leader of the CDU Rhineland-Palatinate (2006–2011 and since 2018) and thus also the leader of the opposition . Baldauf has been a member of the CDU federal executive committee since November 2006 .

Life and work

After graduating from high school, Baldauf studied law and administration in Mannheim and Heidelberg and passed his 1st state examination in 1991 and his 2nd state examination in 1994. In 1993/94 he was a research assistant for Maria Böhmer ( Member of the Bundestag ). In 1995 he joined a law firm in Frankenthal and has been a lawyer and specialist lawyer for labor law ever since .

In 1997 he married. The couple have a son and a daughter.

1983 Baldauf became a member of the CDU and was 1992-96 chairman of the Junge Union of the Frankenthal district association. In 1994 he was elected to the Frankenthal City Council. From 1999 to February 26, 2007 Baldauf was chairman of the CDU district association Frankenthal, his successor was Sonja Schönherr. In 2001 he won the direct mandate and moved into the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate . After his successful re-election in 2006 , he became parliamentary group leader in the Mainz state parliament, and shortly afterwards the party also elected him chairman of the CDU Rhineland-Palatinate.

With 98.3 percent of the vote, Baldauf was confirmed in office as state chairman of the CDU Rhineland-Palatinate by the delegates of the state party conference in September 2008. In 2010, Julia Klöckner succeeded him in the state chairmanship. In 2011, Baldauf became district chairman of the CDU Rheinhessen-Pfalz and 1st deputy chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate. Since March 16, 2018 he has been chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament.

After he had been selected by the CDU state executive as the top candidate for the state election in 2021 in June 2019 , the district administrator of the Rhein-Hunsrück district Marlon Bröhr had also announced an application. In a voting at the party congress on November 16, 2019, Baldauf prevailed with around 80 percent of the delegate's votes, making it the top candidate for the CDU Rhineland-Palatinate.

He works in the state parliament in the council of elders, committee for justice and consumer protection, committee for economy, climate protection, energy and state planning, support of the energy transition in Rhineland-Palatinate, intermediate committee, committee for social affairs, labor, health and demography and in the data protection commission.
