Alexander Funk (born June 18, 1974 in Neunkirchen (Saar) ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He was a member of the Saarland Landtag for the first time between 2004 and 2009 and a member of the German Bundestag from 2009 to 2017 . Funk has been a member of the Saarland state parliament again since 2017 and has been chairman of the CDU parliamentary group there since March 2018.

Life

After reaching secondary school at the Neunkirchen district secondary school, Funk switched to the Christian von Mannlich high school in Homburg . In 1995, after graduating from high school, he began studying business administration at Saarland University . In 2000 he became commercial director of Sirrix AG. From 2003 to September 2004 he worked as an assistant to the management at Werbefunk Saar and Telefilm Saar. Alexander Funk has a daughter. Since 2005 he has been president of the Saarland DJK regional association.

Political offices

In 1991, Funk joined the Junge Union (JU) and CDU. In the same year he became local chairman of the JU Bexbach . In 1994 he took over the function of district chairman of the JU Saarpfalz. From 1999 to 2005 he was state chairman of the JU Saar. From 2002 to 2012 he was the city association chairman of the CDU Bexbach and from 1994 to 2014 a member of the city council of Bexbach. In 2007, Funk also took over the chairmanship of the Bexbach city council.

Alexander Funk was a member of the Saarland State Parliament from 2004 to 2009 . There he was a member of the committees for labor, health and social affairs, economics, science and mine safety as well as finance and budget issues. From 2006 to 2009, Funk was chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in the “Demographic Change” commission of inquiry.

In the 2009 federal election , Funk was a direct candidate for constituency 299 and prevailed with 33.4% against Astrid Klug , who received 30.9% of the first votes. He is the first CDU member of the Bundestag in this constituency since 1965.

On February 5, 2013, he was re-elected as a candidate for the 2013 federal election by a constituency assembly of the CDU in constituency 299 . In this he prevailed with 39.8% of the first votes cast against his SPD challenger David Lindemann.

Funk is a member of the Committee on Transport and Digital Infrastructure, where it is rapporteur for rail policy.

After he announced in 2016 that he would no longer be available for a mandate in the upcoming federal elections in 2017 and would instead stand for the upcoming state elections, he was re-elected to the state parliament in March 2017. There he was initially deputy chairman of the CDU parliamentary group. Funk resigned his parliamentary mandate in July 2017.

On March 5, 2018, Funk was unanimously elected as the new parliamentary group chairman of the Saarland CDU.
