Josef Schmitt (politician, 1921)

Josef Schmitt (born December 28, 1921 in Lockweiler ; † March 19, 1996 in Wadern ) was a German politician ( CDU ).

Life

After attending elementary school and graduating from high school in 1941, Schmitt took part in the Second World War as a soldier , most recently with the rank of lieutenant. Later he was captain of the reserve in the Bundeswehr . Since 1947 he worked as a self-employed businessman.

Schmitt was accepted into the NSDAP on September 1, 1939 ( membership number 7,127,054). After 1945 he was a co-founder of the CDU district association Wadern .

Schmitt was elected to the Saarland state parliament in 1956 , where he was chairman of the CDU parliamentary group from 1957 to 1959 and served as the state parliament president from January 3, 1961 to December 31, 1965. He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1965 to 1976. In parliament he represented the constituency of Saarlouis .

Schmitt has been mayor of the Lockweiler community since 1956 . In 1975 he was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit.
