Wilhelm Kratz (politician)

Wilhelm Kratz (born June 11, 1905 in Kutzhof ; † April 30, 1986 in Merzig ) was a German lawyer and politician ( CDU ).

Life

After graduating from high school, Kratz studied law and in 1924 joined the Scientific Catholic Student Association Unitas -Salia Bonn. Since 1933 he worked as a lawyer in Merzig. On June 1, 1933, Kratz was admitted to the NSDAP ( membership number 2,696,359). In the first Saar referendum in 1935, Kratz fought for the German Front , of which he had been a member since 1934. From 1939 to 1945 he took part in the Second World War as a soldier . At the end of the war he was captured by the British, then arrested by the French Sûreté and interned until 1947.

After his release in 1948 he was re-admitted to the bar. In the 1950s he was one of the founders of the CDU in the Merzig-Wadern district, which was illegal in the then Saar Protectorate .

Kratz was a member of the Saarland Landtag from 1955 to 1960, where he was chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in 1956/57. From March 18, 1957 to February 26, 1959, he was President of the State Parliament. He was sent by the Landtag to the German Bundestag on January 4, 1957 , but resigned his mandate on April 11 of the same year in order to concentrate on the newly assumed office as President of the Landtag.

Honors

Kratz was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit on April 25, 1977 .
