The " Saarbrücker Hefte ", subtitled as "The Saarland Journal for Culture and Society", is one of two cultural-political journals that are now published in Saarland (the other is the periodical " Opus " , which has been published in magazine format since 2007 ).

The Saarbrücker Hefte have been self-published since 1955 and are edited from 1963 to 1989 by Dieter Heinz , the then head of the Saarbrücken municipal conservatory office, and financially supported by the city of Saarbrücken from the budget of the culture and education office since the 10.1957 issue at the latest 11.1960 - 60.1988 from the cultural office of the city of Saarbrücken. Initially the magazine appears twice a year, 1978–1989 only once a year, since issue 61/62 (December 1989) again every six months. Since it was founded, it has had a classic gray design and is based on the octave format of scientific periodicals.

Since 1989, when Dieter Heinz retired, the magazine has pursued a new concept in terms of content. The “Verein Saarbrücker Hefte” was founded as the sponsor, which it still holds today. Externally, the layout of the bindings has also been modernized (issues 61/62 - 82 have a colored cover), with issue 83 from the summer of 2000 a new overall layout was introduced and the magazine has been published by Pfau-Verlag, based in Saarbrücken, for some time .

The volunteer editorial team (as of May 1, 2012) consists of Julian Bernstein, Mirka Borchardt, Bernhard Dahm, Achim Huber, Bernd Nixdorf, Dr. Dietmar Schmitz, Herbert Temmes.

A table of contents for the gray Saarbrücker Hefte is contained in issue 60 from 1988. A table of contents for issues 61/62 (December 1989) to issue 82 (winter 1999) is available on the Pfau-Verlag website.
