The Aquabats are an American musical group from California that was formed in 1994 . The band is also known for their very colorful appearances in superhero costumes.

history

The Aquabats were founded in Huntington Beach , Southern California in 1994 . At the beginning of their career, the band played a mixture of ska and surf rock . Over the years (especially after the second album), however, she moved further and further away from ska. The winds in particular were replaced by synthesizers as the group began to experiment more and more with electronic music .

In 1996 the band released their debut album called The Return of the Aquabats! . Contrary to its own expectations, the album sold very well. The Fury of the Aquabats followed in 1997 ! , which has remained her most successful album to date. The band's musical style developed with their third album The Aquabats vs. The Floating Eye of Death (1999) continues towards new wave with rock 'n' roll and ska elements, underlaid with synthesizer music.

In 2000, the album compilation Myths, Legends and Other Amazing Adventures Vol. 2 was released , which includes previously unreleased older songs, or songs that were written during the creation of The Aquabats vs. the Floating Eye of Death! and Other Amazing Adventures Vol. 1 , but were not used for it. In the years 2000 to 2003 the future of the Aquabats was uncertain due to the dwindling band members and the loss of the record contract. It was not until 2003 that the group was active again with new members and a realignment.

In 2005 the so far last album Charge !! at her new label Nitro Records . On this one more musical development can be seen, which more than ever went in the direction of electroclash and pop-punk .

Band mythology

The Aquabats appear in superhero costumes and have their own fictional biography, according to which they come from the hidden paradise island of Aquabania, from which they were chased away by the evil super villain space monster "M" . They fled across the ocean in a hollowed-out tree trunk and stranded in California , where they were found by the "professor". This turned them into superheroes with the help of chemicals , who disguise themselves as a music group in their free time .

The band uses their performances to defeat the space monster "M" with the help of their musical superpowers. But at the concerts they are regularly attacked by monsters . Sometimes there is also a friendly copy that only wanted to attend the concert. In this case, The MC Bat Commander formally apologizes to the creature and vows never to judge monsters by their appearance again. "Professor" Monty Corndog sometimes accompanies the band on their performances against evil.

Others

  • The TV series The Aquabats Super Show has been running since 2008 ! in production. This deals to a greater extent with the band and their fictional background.
  • The official fan club of the music group calls itself The Aquabats Cadet Faction and its members as Aquacadets . The hallmark of these fans is that, like the band members, they dress in superhero costumes and thus also wear the concerts, which are considered to be the “fights against evil”.
  • In the 1990s, Travis Barker played drums with the Aquabats at times . He later switched to blink-182, in the meantime he played for Blink182 again at +44 since February 2009.
