Thomas Webel (born July 27, 1954 in Bad Pyrmont ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He was chairman of the Christian Democrats in Saxony-Anhalt from 2004 to 2018 and has been state minister for regional development and transport since April 19, 2011 . Before that, he was the district administrator of the Börde district that was created on July 1, 2007 .

Life and work

Webel was born in Bad Pyrmont, Lower Saxony, but his mother from Magdeburg moved with him back to the GDR in 1957. He attended the elementary school in Klein Ammensleben , where he still lives today, and the polytechnic high school in Gutenswegen , now the Niedere Börde . In 1973 he passed the Abitur. He studied at the Technical University of Dresden . After graduating as a qualified engineer for electronic device construction, Webel worked at the LPG Dahlenwarsleben (Niedere Börde) as the head of the material supply department. Webel is married for the second time and has one son.

politics

Webel was a member of the Democratic Peasant Party (DBD) in GDR times , resigned from it in October 1989 and joined the Social Democratic Party in the GDR (SDP) on November 10th . Webel has been a member of the CDU since 1990. At the beginning of the 1990s he worked in the main administration of the Wolmirstedt district office as a department head. In 1990 he ran for the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt and was elected. He remained a member of the state parliament until 2002. During this time he was active in the interior committee. In 1991 he was elected honorary and in 1992 full-time district administrator of the Wolmirstedt district. In June 1994 he was elected District Administrator of the Ohrekreis and confirmed in office in 2001. In 2001, after a subsidy affair, he was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for aiding and abetting embezzlement, which was suspended: in 1995, he had admitted the falsification of invoices at an ABM company in order to charge the company with the Federal Employment Agency prior to bankruptcy preserve. On April 22, 2007 he was elected with 50.1 percent of the votes for the first district administrator of the district of Börde, which was created on July 1, 2007 from the merger of the Ohrekreis and the Bördekreis.

Webel was state chairman of the CDU Saxony-Anhalt from 2004 to 2018. On April 19, 2011, Webel became Minister for Regional Development and Transport in the Haseloff I cabinet . He retained his office in Haseloff II's cabinet .

In autumn 2014 Webel was accused by the state parliament opposition of being involved in a subsidy affair again and of possibly denying existing knowledge of billing problems when converting a sports hall in Wolmirstedt in front of parliament.

Webel has been chairman of the building ministers' conference of the 16 German federal states for two years since 2016.
