history

Village church of St Catherine
Former inn from the 19th century

Gutenswegen was first mentioned in a document in 937 under the name Wuatanesweg. In 1937 a celebration of the 1000th anniversary took place. The place is the oldest settlement in the area. The village was given to the Moritzkloster in Magdeburg by Emperor Otto I. In 1012 King Heinrich II appointed Gero from the family of the Counts of Gutenswegen as archbishop against the will of the cathedral chapter .

The oldest farms in town are near the Kirchenberg. There is no knowledge of the settlement history of the village. The upper part of the church hill initially formed a building boundary, from which the name "Before the gate" was formed. The poorer farmers settled in the eastern part of Gutenswegen, which is today's pants leg. The place survived the Thirty Years War relatively well in contrast to other places. But in 1689 and 1781 Gutenswegen was badly damaged by two large fires. In 1855 cholera struck the town.

In 1820 and 1836 the fields were redistributed through the separation . Large farms were created. Industrialization began in Gutenswegen in the 19th century. The place started to grow. As seen from the Kirchenberg, Gutenswegen was further developed to the northeast. After 1855 the first houses were built on Groß Ammensleber- and Vahldorfer Weg. After 1900 the first houses “Before the Gate” were built and after the First World War , construction began on Ackendorfer Weg.

In 1936 the Italian national team trained in Gutenswegen, mainly in the bathing establishment, for the Olympic Games in Berlin .

Gutenswegen has been known as a carnival stronghold since 1955, with its own Rose Monday parade in the area of the former Ohrekreis and with several hundred visitors a year far beyond the borders of the community.

1985–1988 Gutenswege could be connected to the central water supply network. After the reunification , agriculture had to be restructured. The LPG animal production was closed as the largest employer in town.

Gutenswegen was incorporated on January 1, 2004 through the voluntary merger with seven other municipalities in the newly formed community of Niedere Börde . Before that she belonged to the administrative community of Niedere Börde , which was founded on January 1, 1994 and dissolved on January 1, 2004.

Place name

Gutenswegen was first mentioned under the name Wuatanesweg , but it often changed its spelling. From 941 it was called Vodeneswege , from 973 Vodensweg , from 1231 Wodensweg , from 1300 Wodenswege , from 1382 it was called Gudenswege and from 1785 it was called Gutenswegen. Historians and name researchers attribute the name to the highest Germanic god Wotan . His sanctuary is said to have been in the area until Christianization .

Blazon : "In silver on a green rooted tree stump with two branches that end in red, gold-tipped and gold-seeded roses, a crouching black, gold-armored raven."

The name Gutenswegen, in medieval form Wodeneswege, goes back to Wodan, to whom the raven is sacred. The tree stump with roses is taken from the coat of arms of the extinct noble family of Wodenswegen, which had one decorated with four roses. For good reason, the eponymous ancestral seat of the family was.

The coat of arms was designed by the Magdeburg State Archives Councilor Otto Korn .

Attractions

Church tower of the village church
Part of the village wall

In the south of the village is the village church “St. Katharina ”(patronage at St. Sebastian Abbey in Magdeburg), which is a flat-roofed hall church with an apse . The oldest parts of the church date from the end of the 12th century , it was first mentioned in 1322 by the pastor Gebhard. Other parts, such as the Romanesque west transverse tower, were added later in the 13th to 16th centuries . The nave was completely rebuilt in 1771, the semicircular apse was added in 1888 and the interior of the church was artistically painted. The altar , the crucifix , the baptismal stand , the pulpit , the lectern and number boards , made in the workshop of the wood sculptor Gustav Kuntzsch , Wernigerode , also date from this time . There are five valuable wooden figures from the Gutensweg church in a museum in Halle.

In the post-war period and in the time of the GDR , the church building fell into disrepair. The parish had declining membership. The storm Quimburga in mid-November 1972 brought the roof of the church to collapse. The roof of the nave and the tower were renewed in 1992 with funds from the rectory sale. The tower of the church received its restored weather vane. It was designed by Adolf Rettelbusch , who became known as a Brocken painter . Until 2003 the church was constantly renovated. New windows were installed and the floor and the vaults in the tower were renewed on their own initiative. Therefore church services and concerts can take place again. Nevertheless, the church is threatened with decay. The west side of the tower was in ruins for a long time until it was renovated in 2010. There were also new sound hatches and a new dial for the clock.

Half-timbered house on the Kirchenberg, inscription: "WHO TRUSTED GOD HAS WOLGEBUT - THE LORD HAS HELPED ME UP TO HERE"

The approximately 2 meter high village wall of Gutenswege, which used to protect the place, is still visible in some places today, including on the Gänseberg.

South of the village there is an extensive natural monument , the "mixed deciduous forest source area". Mainly there are beeches and ash trees . There are two springs in the south and west of the area. The herb layer contains rare plant species, e.g. B. the large two-leaf or the broad-leaved stendellum . A reed bed and ruderal vegetation have formed along the stream valley . Since such wetlands and natural spring areas are rarely found in Germany, especially in the Magdeburg Börde , this area has been protected.

The former manor house of the Riecke family, built in 1888/1889, is currently in use as a community center on Gutenswegen. In the meantime, it was first used as a company building, and after 1945 by the Soviet commandant's office even as an office building for the machine rental station, machine-tractor station and repair-tractor station. In 1971 the kindergarten moved into the premises of the building, in 1994 a branch of the Groß Ammensleben doctor's practice and the mayor's office. Meetings of the local council also take place in the building. The upper part of the building, a large hall with wood paneling, painted ceiling and leaded glass windows, is used for celebrations and other events.

Buildings that were built in the 19th or 20th centuries are also scattered throughout the village. Most of them have been restored. Examples are the primary school building, the gymnasium or the community hall. The famous “Wotanshof” is a listed, renovated four-sided courtyard and is around 250 years old. It was formerly owned by the well-to-do Gutensweg family Schneidewindt. It is the meeting point of the Heimat- und Kulturverein, and a brass band from Dresden comes there twice a year to rehearse in front of the backdrop.

The graves of three forced laborers from Poland and Yugoslavia who were deported to Germany during the Second World War and were victims of forced labor are located in the local cemetery .

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

Around 1820 there were large farms with industrial methods of agriculture in the village. At first, such farms were worked on a decentralized basis, but from 1860, after the beginning of industrialization in the village in the 19th century, an intensive expansion of the technical equipment began. The first silos were built on the kiln. After the fall of the Wall , a restructuring of agriculture was necessary. The LPG animal production was closed as the largest employer. What remained was the LPG plant production , today DAWA-Agrar GmbH base Gutenswegen. He is the largest employer in town. The primary sector is relatively large and important thanks to agriculture and the large surrounding fields with fertile soil. Several small and medium-sized enterprises in the secondary and tertiary sector are located in the village .
