The Oebisfelde – Magdeburg railway is a 64-kilometer, single-track, non-electrified main line in the north-west of Saxony-Anhalt . North of Magdeburg to the Glindenberg junction shortly before Barleben , the double-track, electrified railway line Magdeburg – Wittenberge is also used. The kilometering begins at the Glindenberg junction and ends in Oebisfelde , where the Oebisfelde – Magdeburg railway meets the Stendal – Wolfsburg railway .

Route

The line connects the former Oebisfelde railway junction near Wolfsburg with the state capital Magdeburg. The most important train station on the way is the district town of Haldensleben . The route runs almost parallel to the Mittelland Canal , which is crossed twice. The north of the route lies on the edge of the Drömling moorland area , while the Flechtinger ridge and the Calvörde mountains are touched to the north of Haldensleben . To the south of it, the flat landscape of the Magdeburg Börde is crossed.

The connection is aimed primarily at Magdeburg and rush hour traffic to Wolfsburg.

history

The Magdeburg– Neuhaldensleben line (Haldensleben since 1939) was opened on December 16, 1872 by the Magdeburg-Halberstädter Railway . The same company opened operations on the northern section to Oebisfelde station on November 1, 1874.

In the German Democratic Republic , the Deutsche Reichsbahn (1945-1993) ran the line with two course book route numbers (KBS). The KBS 702 ran from Schönebeck (Elbe) / Bad Salzelmen via Magdeburg to Haldensleben or Zielitz , while the KBS 764 ran from Haldensleben via Oebisfelde to Salzwedel .

There was always brisk freight traffic on the route, mainly due to the mining of salts . It was important for long-distance passenger transport at the time of the division of Germany . The interzonal trains from West Germany (Cologne) to Saxony (Leipzig) were directed on this route by Lehrte via Wolfsburg and Oebisfelde. So they came from the north to Magdeburg main station and did not need to change the direction of travel or the locomotive . Until the 1980s, all traffic was carried out with steam locomotives of the DR class 50.35 .

After German reunification , the route was given the course book number 309 (later 308). The route was used for a number of years as part of Interregio Line 17 from Cologne via Hanover , Magdeburg, Leipzig to Dresden . The Haldensleben – Magdeburg route was served in local traffic every 40 minutes, the northern section half as often.

The section from Barleben to the Glindenberg junction on the Stendal – Magdeburg railway line, which was only a few kilometers long, was electrified during the GDR era to facilitate freight traffic to Barleben. The overhead line was dismantled in the early 2000s. The stop in Magdeburg-Rothensee was also given up at the beginning of the 2000s.

The half-timbered bridge over the Mittelland Canal between the stations Vahldorf and Groß Ammensleben was replaced in 2006 by a bridge with a larger width due to the widening of the canal.

With federal and state funds, a modernization including barrier-free expansion of the Meitzendorf station is planned over the next few years .

business

The route is part of the diesel network of the Saxony-Anhalt local transport service (DISA network). According to the first invitation to tender, railcars of the 642 series operated by the Elbe Saale Bahn , a subsidiary of DB Regio , ran until 2018 .

Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland has operated the train service since December 2018 . The subsidiary of the Dutch State Railways won the tender and is expected to serve the DISA network until December 2032. LINT railcars are used, which were equipped with sockets and WiFi according to the tender .

The trains usually run every two hours from Oebisfelde to Magdeburg. Several trains are tied through from Wolfsburg. In addition, there are some amplifier trains that do not stop everywhere. From Haldensleben there is at least one hourly service. As a special feature, there is a change of time at lunchtime; the trains only cross in Haldensleben in the afternoon. The travel times of the regional trains, which stop at all stations, are around 75 minutes for the entire route and 30 minutes for the Haldensleben – Magdeburg section. These services are operated as RB 36, repeater trains operate as RE6.

Along the route there is still mechanical technology such as shape signals and guard-operated barriers . Freight traffic continues. Among other things, the port of Bülstringen on the Mittelland Canal is served by a branch line that was previously part of the Haldensleben – Gardelegen railway line . In Haldensleben, a pull-out track on the line has opened up the Haldensleben city port since 1937 . In Flechtingen , an approximately four-kilometer-long siding branches off to a quarry, which ensures a high volume of goods. The second canal bridge, located north of Haldensleben, was replaced in 2009 by a network arch bridge.

In Haldensleben, on the site of the former Haldensleben depot, there is a maintenance workshop that belongs to Strabag .
