The Schönebeck – Glindenberg railway is a main line in and around Magdeburg that is operated exclusively for freight traffic. The line is double-track and electrified. It is used to bypass train stations and thus avoid bottlenecks.

history

The freight line was opened on July 1, 1925. The electrification took place in sections. On September 30, 1956, the 12.6 kilometer section between Schönebeck (Elbe) and Magdeburg-Buckau marshalling yard was electrified. The 2.5 kilometer long section Magdeburg-Buckau marshalling yard - Magdeburg main station followed on January 6, 1957. Subsequently, on January 31, 1974, the 5.9 kilometer section Magdeburg main station - Magdeburg-Rothensee was equipped with overhead lines. Finally, the 3.1 kilometer long Magdeburg-Rothensee-Glindenberg junction was electrified.

Route

The route, which runs parallel to other railway lines running through Magdeburg, begins at the Glindenberg junction north of Magdeburg. After crossing under the Autobahn 2 , the Rothensee freight yard is passed through. After a connection to the Magdeburg port railway , a bridge that spans the Magdeburg – Wittenberge and the Oebisfelde – Magdeburg railway , and a connecting curve to the Berlin – Magdeburg railway , the freight traffic sections of the Magdeburg-Neustadt and Magdeburg main station are reached. Then the Braunschweig – Magdeburg railway line is crossed with two connecting curves to form the freight line and the freight section of the Magdeburg-Buckau station is passed through. In the further course of the route, the Magdeburg – Thale and Magdeburg – Leipzig lines will be transferred to the Schönebeck – Glindenberg railway and the Buckau depot will be reached. This is followed by a former branch of the previous route of the Magdeburg – Thale railway line and the freight section of the Magdeburg Südost station . The Schönebeck (Elbe) freight yard is located further on. Finally, Schönebeck (Elbe) train station is reached after two industrial connections.
