The Biederitz – Magdeburg-Buckau railway was a single-track, non-electrified railway line in what is now Saxony-Anhalt . It went into operation in 1846/47 as part of the Berlin – Magdeburg railway line . After it was relocated in 1873, the old line continued to be used for freight traffic and was integrated into the train stations in Biederitz and Magdeburg-Buckau . It was primarily of military importance and is colloquially known as the cannon train . There was also passenger traffic for a short time in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1990s, the line was closed. With the Magdeburg lift bridge , the bridge over the Old Elbe and the flood bridge over the Ehle , several bridge structures along the route are listed.
history
The line was originally built as part of the construction of the Potsdam-Magdeburg railway line by the Berlin-Potsdam-Magdeburg Railway Company in 1846/47 and passed Biederitz to the east. There was a continuous train service to Magdeburg-Buckau after completion of the Elbe bridge from August 19, 1848. In the 1870s, as part of the connection to the new Magdeburg main station, the section between Burg and Magdeburg was re-routed with a crossing of the ridge of the Hohen Fläming near Möser , the construction of a wedge station near Biederitz and the Herrenkrug railway bridge . The old route from Burg via Niegripp , Hohenwarthe, Lostau and Gerwisch past Biederitz was abandoned. The section southwest of Biederitz remained in operation, the line via Brückfeld and the Buckau depot was swiveled to the Biederitz and Magdeburg-Buckau stations. The railway line served as a freight connection line and bypass route to Magdeburg Central Station.
For a short time after the Second World War, the line had passenger traffic until around the mid-1960s. In 1960 four passenger trains ran on weekdays from Magdeburg-Buckau to Biederitz with stops in Magdeburg-Brückfeld and Magdeburg-Friedensweiler, in the opposite direction there were three (Monday to Friday) and two (Saturdays). After 1990, the route lost its importance. On January 6, 1998, the application for the closure of the line was approved by the Federal Railway Authority, on February 28, 1998 the closure followed and a short time later the tracks were dismantled.
Route
The route began in the Biederitz wedge station. After passing the junctions to Potsdam , in the direction of Dessau-Roßlau and the Biederitz-Altengrabow railway line as well as the former junction from Potsdam, the Elbe flood canal was crossed on the flood bridge over the Ehle . Then the freight yard Brückfeld was reached. Then the route crossed three different Elbarme, the old Elbe , the Taube Elbe and over the lift bridge Magdeburg the Stromelbe. Then a former junction from the Elbhafen, a junction from the main train station and a junction from Glindenberg were passed. Finally the Buckau depot was reached.
On the part of the route east of the Elbe there is now a cycle path .
