The Biederitz – Altengrabow line is a standard-gauge , single-track branch line in Saxony-Anhalt . Since local transport was discontinued in December 2011, there have only been occasional trains of the local museum railway between Loburg and Altengrabow and special military trains to the Altengrabow military training area at times along the entire route .

history

From the beginning until 1945

On October 1, 1892, the Prussian State Railways opened a standard-gauge branch line from Biederitz to Loburg. The small railways of the Jerichow I (KJ I) district joined Groß Lübars (later only called Lübars) on July 18, 1896, on the one hand with a narrow-gauge railway towards Burg , and on October 8 of the same year a cross-connection followed from Groß Lübars via Altengrabow and Magdeburgerforth to Ziesar . At the beginning of the 20th century, the KJ I planned a connection from Groß Lübars to Gommern , which was to be connected to the standard gauge line to Biederitz in Loburg. The section from Groß Lübars to Loburg was opened on July 21, 1902. A large military training area was created near Altengrabow. That is why the section between Loburg and Altengrabow was provided with a three- rail track (1435/750 mm). The narrow-gauge locomotives of the KJ I transported regular-gauge wagons for military traffic using an intermediate wagon.

During the existence of the narrow-gauge railway, the sections were always used separately for passenger traffic. Regular gauge trains ran between Biederitz (mostly starting in Magdeburg) and Loburg, narrow gauge trains between Ziesar and Loburg. The offer was mostly sparse and limited to three to five pairs of trains a day.

After 1945

After the end of the Second World War , the KJ I routes first came to Sächsische Provinzbahnen GmbH and on April 1, 1949 to the Deutsche Reichsbahn . The Altengrabow military training area was operated by the Soviet Army , which continued to use the route for military transports. In 1965 the entire narrow-gauge railway network around Burg and Ziesar was shut down. The standard gauge track between Loburg and Altengrabow remained in operation, and from then on passenger traffic also ran through to Altengrabow. In 1968 there were six passenger trains a day on the entire route in both directions, plus two pairs of weekday trains that only ran from Magdeburg to Loburg.

On January 15, 1999, passenger traffic between Loburg and Altengrabow was stopped. In the previous months, an average of only six travelers per day had been carried on this section. At times after 1999 there is still military traffic for the Bundeswehr , which had taken over the Altengrabow military training area.

Todays situation

Renovation work took place on the line in 2003, during which new platforms with a height of 55 centimeters were built, which enabled barrier-free access to the trains.

The route was used until December 11, 2011 in passenger traffic by the regional train line 35 of DB Regio Südost ( Elbe-Saale-Bahn ). The trains ran continuously from Magdeburg to Loburg every two hours. In the morning rush hour there were amplifier trains. When the timetable changed, passenger traffic was discontinued due to poor infrastructure and the resulting increase in travel times. As a substitute, permanent bus traffic has been set up. Against this, protests were directed by residents of the Biederitz-Loburg region, united in the “Pro Bahn Magdeburg-Loburg” initiative.

The eastern section from Loburg to Altengrabow is used as a museum railway. In 2010 and 2011, two pairs of trains were planned for three days a year. On April 12, 2012, DB Netz tendered the route for the purpose of decommissioning or handing it over to other railway infrastructure companies , with the special feature that the Bundeswehr paid grants for the Loburg – Altengrabow section as a connection for the training area in Altengrabow. The negotiations led by DB Netz to take over the route resulted in RegioInfra leasing the route since March 1, 2015. The prerequisite for this was the approval of the Ministry of Defense.

Since the takeover, the Büden station has been rebuilt and a new loading ramp for the military training area has been built in Altengrabow. This consists of a head ramp and a 200 meter long side ramp and was completed in December 2016.

In the affected communities there are always demands that the infrastructure be used again for passenger traffic.
