The Biederitz – Trebnitz line is a double-track, electrified main line in Saxony-Anhalt . The route begins in Biederitz near Magdeburg and runs via Güterglück in the direction of Dessau-Roßlau . It has its nominal end point near Trebnitz on the former border between the Duchy of Anhalt and Prussia , where it merges into the Trebnitz – Leipzig railway line .

history

The line from Biederitz to the then Prussian / Anhalt border near Trebnitz was built by the Berlin-Potsdam-Magdeburg Railway Company and went into operation on July 1, 1874, initially on a single track. At the same time, the Berlin-Anhalt Railway Company opened the section from the border to Zerbst . There was a connection to the route from Roßlau an der Elbe, which had already been opened on November 1, 1863, in 1882 the Prussian State Railways took over the route.

The double-track line, which was expanded early on, was electrified in 1923 as part of the Leipzig – Dessau – Magdeburg connection. In 1946 the electrical operation in the entire central German network was stopped again, the systems were broken down in a non-gentle way and given to the USSR as reparations . At the same time the second track was dismantled.

In the 1970s the second track was laid again. On April 15, 1975, electrical operations between Magdeburg Neustadt and Zerbst were resumed.

Route

End of the route at the former Trebnitz block

After the branch line branches off in the direction of Altengrabow, the route runs along its entire length in a south-easterly direction and after crossing Bundesstraße 1, it runs largely parallel to Bundesstraße 184 , which it crosses under Gommern . Before that, Bundesstraße 246 will be crossed at Königsborn at the same level. In Güterglück station , a former tower station , the Berlin – Blankenheim railway line (cannon line), which has been disused in this area, is crossed under . After a further three kilometers, the route ends at the former Trebnitz block point north of the village of the same name and, after changing kilometers, immediately merges into the Trebnitz – Leipzig railway line .

business

From 1993 to 1995, the section from Biederitz to the Kanonenbahn connecting curve at Güterglück was used for long-distance traffic with ICE and InterCity trains from West Germany to Berlin, as the Güterglück-Belzig-Berlin-Wannsee route was used as a diversion until the Berlin-Magdeburg railway was upgraded was used at a top speed of 160 km / h. From 1994 there was also a pair of inter-regional trains with a route that changed almost every year between the Saxon-East Thuringian and north-west German regions. This long-distance train only stopped in Zerbst between Magdeburg and Dessau.

DB Regio Südost is currently using this route for passenger transport under the brand name Elbe Saale Bahn . The regional express line RE 13 ( Magdeburg - Dessau - Leipzig ) runs every hour , as well as the RE 14 line ( Magdeburg - Lutherstadt Wittenberg ) with a few trips during rush hour .

outlook

Due to the expansion of the eastern corridor for freight traffic to and from the German seaports and the Węgliniec – Roßlau railway to Eastern Europe, capacity utilization will continue to increase over the next few years. Because of the resulting longer closing times and increasing road traffic, further level crossings are to be replaced by bridges.

Since the facilities of the Güterglück tower station are missing, Deutsche Bahn originally wanted to fill the passenger tunnel at the end of 2017 and take the northern platform out of service. The construction of a new bridge at the existing traffic station was rejected. Instead, new, more local platforms are to be built, which are at ground level and therefore accessible from the Moritzer Straße level crossing. Since their construction is delayed, a temporary overpass was built at the end of 2018.
