The Magdeburg port railway runs in the urban area of Magdeburg and connects the port of Magdeburg at the Magdeburg-Rothensee freight station with the Schönebeck – Glindenberg railway . It enables cargo to be loaded between shipping and rail transport . The port railway is subordinate to the Magdeburger Hafen GmbH .

It has a route network of 54 kilometers and is in possession of three radio-controlled, EBO -approved traction vehicles. In addition to a DR V 60 and a two-way - Unimog that includes a hybrid locomotive that Alstom based on a diesel locomotive class V 100 rebuilt. It was acquired in June 2012 as part of the Greenport project.

The port railway is connected to the rest of the railway network through the connection to the Rothensee freight yard. In addition to shunting services in the port area and at Rothensee train station, it also offers wagon inspectors, the parking of freight wagons and locomotives, the weighing of freight wagons and workshop services.

In 2014, the port railway transported 1.4 million tons of goods, an increase of eight percent compared to the previous year.
