Amélie de Montchalin (born Bommier ; born June 19, 1985 in Lyon ) is a French politician ( La République en Marche ). From March 2019 to July 2020, she was State Secretary for European Affairs in the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs as well as the Commissioner for Franco-German cooperation . Since July 6, 2020, she has been Minister for Change and Public Service in the Castex cabinet .

Career

Amélie de Montchalin is the daughter of a manager and a nurse. She attended the Lycée Hoche in Versailles , studied at the University of Paris IV (Sorbonne), where she got a degree in history, and the École des hautes études commerciales de Paris (HEC), where she graduated with a master's degree in economics. In 2007 she worked for six months as an intern and member of parliament at Valérie Pécresse from the conservative UMP , who was then Minister for Higher Education and Research.

From 2009 to 2012, during the world financial crisis , de Montchalin worked for the major bank BNP Paribas as an economist for the euro zone . From 2012 to 2014 she completed a Master of Public Administration at Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge , Massachusetts . From 2014 to 2017 she worked for the French insurance group Axa , most recently as responsible for public policy and future research.

Political offices

In December 2016, Amélie de Montchalin joined the newly founded political movement En Marche by Emmanuel Macron . After his election as President , she ran in the parliamentary election in June 2017 for the party La République en Marche in the 6th constituency of the Essonne department and was elected as a member of the French National Assembly. There she became the coordinator of her group in the finance committee. In this position, she was rapporteur for draft budget laws for 2018 and 2019 and for the special report on the budget for research and innovation. In September 2018, she applied to chair the LREM group in the National Assembly, but was defeated by Gilles Le Gendre. However, she was elected deputy group leader.

On March 31, 2019, on the proposal of Prime Minister Édouard Philippe , President Emmanuel Macron appointed Amélie de Montchalin as State Secretary for European Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (under Foreign and European Ministers Jean-Yves Le Drian ). She gave up her seat in the National Assembly. In addition, she assumed the position of commissioner for Franco-German cooperation. On July 6, 2020, she was appointed Minister for Change and Civil Service in the Castex cabinet.

Personal

She is married to Guillaume de Montchalin, who is a consultant with the Boston Consulting Group . The couple has three children.
