Schu ( Kazakh and Russian Шу ; until 1993 Чу Tschu ) is a city in southern Kazakhstan .

geography

The city is located on the river Schu of the same name, 265 km northeast of the regional capital Taras in the Shambyl region .

history

The history of the city begins with the construction of the Turkestani-Siberian railway line in 1928. At that time there were no other settlements in the area apart from a small village. In the first few years, only an old freight wagon served as the station, a station building was not built until 1932. In 1929 a railway depot for the maintenance of steam locomotives was opened, and a hospital was added two years later.

With the increase in population, the place became an urban settlement on December 29, 1937. In 1953 a branch line was put into operation, which branched off from Tschu, making the place a railway junction. In the same year a mechanical repair shop for the repair of agricultural machines was opened. In this, tractors and combine harvesters from all over the Soviet Union were repaired. Two years later, a diesel locomotive depot went into operation. In December 1960 the place was given city rights. In 1963 a sugar factory in Tschu started production. There were plantations of sugar beet near the city , which were processed in the factory.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of Kazakhstan, the city was renamed Shu on May 4, 1993. At the same time, the city's large companies ran into economic difficulties. So the sugar factory was closed and in the mid-1990s another large employer ceased operations with the repair facility.
