Wassili Bartold

Vasily Bartold ( Russian Василий Владимирович Бартольд , born November 3 jul. / 15. November  1869 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † 19th August 1930 ibid), maiden name Wilhelm Barthold , was a Russian and Soviet Orientalist, anthropologist and historian who in the succession of Wilhelm Radloff as the greatest authority in the field of Turkic Studies .

He taught at St. Petersburg University . From 1918 to 1921 he was director of the Petersburg Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography .

Bartold provided important work on the history of western Central Asia , Iran , Islam , the caliphate and oriental studies . At times he was an emigrant professor in Turkey.
