An Akyn ( Kyrgyz акын ) is a folk poet in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan . Akyne compete against each other in competitions and entertain guests at weddings and other occasions by playing a plucked instrument and reciting spoken words.

Akyne also have political issues in their repertoire.

Akyn was named Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003 (since 2008 Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity ).
